My Approach...
The approach I take is largely relational, meaning that I feel that it is important to create a strong therapeutic relationship, built on mutual trust and respect. I also believe in demonstrating warmth, care and empathy, and being very open and transparent (congruent) rather than being a 'blank slate.' As an integrative practitioner, I draw from a wife range of therapeutic approaches and techniques, tailoring therapy to match the patients needs and goals.
Where empathy and emotional support have been lacking, I seek to provide this corrective experience with the use of humanistic / person-centred techniques.
Sometimes however, the way that the patient is protecting themselves from further hurt or disappointment is often what is making a problem worse, or at least maintaining it. In these cases I might try to help the patient to see things differently or take a different behavioural approach, in order to help them to heal.
Of course, if a patient specifically requests Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR), I will of course use standard therapy protocols.
